Is he more than meets the eye?

TF, above all the changes, needed to be more serious with less slapstick - which no-one can deny there was a lot of.
Plot wise - initially the animated show was pretty solid, only later it became somewhat convoluted and messy.
Insert lame Dino-bot joke here... It wouldn't bother me if the flavor of the month Rapper didn't make an appearance in the next film either.

I think the movie had to have humor. If it took the story too serious, it would be ridiculous because then you'd really notice the faults and get picky with the logic. Like why do the Transformers speak to each other when sending out a stream of info would faster and easier?

Yeah, different directors would have made different movies. If Spielberg had directed it, Sam and his father wouldn't have gotten along. If Cameron had directed it...hmm, it's hard to remember how he directs since he hasn't done it for over a decade...he probably would have had the girl be more of a tomboy, and probably be the main character. And he would have married her.

I really liked the tone of the movie myself. It was set up to appeal to kids as well as adults, which is important since it is based on a toy. Energon could easily be used as a motivation in the sequel, but I think having the cube (which I think would have been called the Matrix if it weren't for those lousy movies of the same name) was more essential in this first movie, simply because it was the source of life for the Transformers and capable of making whoever owned it the most powerful bot around.

I'm hoping that in the sequel they have some government-made Transformers. We know they tried it because of that room with the box in it where they made the cell phone into a Transformer. Maybe there's even an old Transformer around somewhere that came to life on that ship that had Sam's great-grandfather (or whatever he was). Something like a ham-radio Transformer.

Yes, many good points, Ford! I agree with u where u point out the importance of humor in the film

I think the main reason people have a dislike or problem with Roddy is that he directly 'replaced' the iconic Optimus Prime.
I must admit I did prefer Ultra Magnus or Ironhide as the new 'leader'. 'Ironhide-Prime' sounds pretty good.
Still, I don't see why they couldn't get Prime revamped into a fresh looking character like Megatron to Galvatron.

My main problem with Hot Rod is that he was voiced by Judd Nelson. I mean...ewww.

Default All it is is a lack of imagination and faithfulness.

That was a major issue with fans and casual viewers alike. Even more of an issue than Optimus Prime's 'flame' paintjob.

I know I haven't put across a positive opinion so far about the film anyway , so here's another complaint.
In the case of Bumblebee, he is a Beetle. That is who he is, how fans know him and echoes his personality as a loveable character that relates easily to humans. He's an icon second only to Prime.
If its the engine power problem: as evidenced, a TF isn't limited to the power or speed of what it transforms into - its just a disguise.
A high speed chase between a Beetle and a Saleen would have worked well and above all been different.
There have been many excuses why he is a Camaro:
"..he is still Bumblebee, the clothes don't make the man..." - Rubbish.
"..we needed to modernise him..." - New Beetle?
"..Sam wouldn't want a Beetle as a first car these days..." - you mean a 'foreign' car.
"..He would be too small in robot form..." - thats the point.
It was easier to just say, "We have a product placement deal with GM, so there!"

I was also pissed when I heard that bumble bee would be a muscle car Camaro. Bumble Bee is a VW Beetle, period. Next thing we know, Optimus would be turned into a Skyline GT-R.

Well, there's actually many other Transformers toy series which use different vehicles from the original. For instance, in the Binaltech/Alternators series Optimus Prime is a Dodge Ram:

It easy enough to replace the vehicles. But...

The movie is based on the original series, so the complaints about turning Bumblebee into a Camarro are justifiable.
