The Punisher: War Zone
"Release Date: September 12th, 2008
Directed By: Lexi Alexander
Starring: Nick Santora, Kurt Sutter, Matt Holloway, Art Marcum
Ray Stevenson (as Castle/Punisher) , Dominic West, Doug Hutchinson, Wayne Knight, Dash Mihok, Colin Salmon, Julie Benz
Studio: Lionsgate
Waging his one-man war on the world of organized crime, ruthless vigilante-hero Frank Castle sets his sights on overeager mob boss Billy Russoti. After Russoti is left horribly disfigured by Castle, he sets out for vengeance under his new alias: Jigsaw. With the "Punisher Task Force" hot on his trail and the FBI unable to take Jigsaw in, Frank must stand up to the formidable army that Jigsaw has recruited before more of his evil deeds go unpunished.
New film will be set in New York, where Castle runs up against a mobster. Ray Stevenson takes over the Castle roll from Thomas Jane.
New project will mark the third screen incarnation for "The Punisher," which originated in a comic book about Frank Castle, a Marine-turned-vigilante who is driven by a desire to avenge the murder of his family after they witness a gangland killing.
Property was turned into a 1989 film that starred Dolph Lundgren and then into a 2004 pic that starred Thomas Jane. "
I am hopeful that this will make up for the lacklustre Jane outing. I preferred the Dolph version, some people didn't and many actually like both versions.
I'm also happy 'MicroChip' (Wayne Knight) is in this one. Should be good, but we'll wait and see!

I like what I've seen so far from this one. I liked the Jane version, but it had an odd tone. It would alternate from violent to funny and then back again. I've read the director was really handcuffed by his budget though. Jane was supposed to be back for this movie and was looking forward to it, but had to pull out for some reason.

The director, a woman (for an action film thats rare), wants this War Zone movie to echo the early War Zone comics. Which after reading my brother's collection of them again is a great idea.
I have watched Jane's film again, just last night actually, but it still fails to grab me.
If I may, in my opinion he's too soft in both looks and attitude. Also, the story started OK, but quickly went off in a strange direction with all the setting up of the wife, the whole Hydrant scene seems to stick in my mind - Dangerous, tough guy Punisher...with a fake Hydrant...
Plus, the love interest and the slapstick neighbors are unecessary and crude. As for the Russian, I know he was in one of the recent comics, but he seems like he's from a completely different film - Spidey, Captain America or Iron Man perhaps.
No, it certainly isn't the Punisher I remember from the books or the Dolph film (which was in theme and style almost a facsimile of the book).
Still, people seemed to like the Jane film, so I won't take anything away from them of course. Each to his own.

Yeah, I wish it had been a pure, violent action film. Something along the lines of "Dirty Harry". That scene where they wiped out Castle's family has to go down as one of the most violent scenes ever. I think that I want to like more than I actually like it. It was nice to see Travolta go out in a humiliating way though. I only wish he would have yanked that ridiculous wig off of him.

You mean the one with Travolta and Jane or the very first with Lundgren?
I'm very impressed with what I've seen and heard about this new one and it helps to know that the director is a fan of the Dolph Lundgren film.

It seems like this one draws more from the MAX series. I was looking at the cast of characters and saw Ink and Maginty in the credits.
Well, in the MAX series, Maginty was a black irishman who was a local gangleader. And Ink was an assassin for Nicky Cavella.
