Metal Gear Solid Movie Is A Go-Ahead.
Apparently, its all-go:
"Sony Pictures making Metal Gear movie
Executive confirms his movie studio is working on the live-action adaptation of the seminal stealth action series; Sony also pondering EverQuest film.
By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot
At the Electronic Entertainment Expo last year, Konami revealed that work had begun on a live-action movie based on Metal Gear Solid. The news broke via a pamphlet for Studio Kojima, the Konami-owned development house headed up by Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima.
"I have received many offers to adapt Metal Gear Solid. It has taken a long time, but we have finally settled on an arrangement," Kojima said in a statement. "False facts aside, a movie project is underway. I have finalized a Class-A contract with a party in Hollywood."
For eight months, the identity of the aforementioned "party" was unknown. That changed this week, when Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau revealed his studio is developing the project.
"We're working with the Metal Gear guys," Landau told GameSpot following his D.I.C.E. summit keynote address in Las Vegas. "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"
Landau also hinted the Metal Gear Solid movie may just be the beginning. "There are other games we are looking to develop," the executive said. "We're working with one of my favorite producers right now on an idea for an EverQuest movie." The producer was apparently of such stature that Landau declined to name him. "I'll let him disclose that," he said cryptically.
Besides the forthcoming World of Warcraft film, currently in development at Warner Bros., the Metal Gear Solid movie is the highest-profile game-film project in Hollywood. Previously, that stature was held by the Peter Jackson-produced Halo adaptation, which imploded last year.
[UPDATE] On Friday, news of Sony's involvement surfaced in the Hollywood trades, which gave further details on the deal. According to The Hollywood Reporter, former New Line Cinema chief Michael De Luca is in talks to produce the project, with Kojima himself being named as executive producer.
Sony executives Sam Dickerman and Doug Belgrad are in charge of finalizing the deal to acquire the Metal Gear Solid film rights, which is apparently close to completion. Belgrad hailed the Metal Gear IP as "loaded with well-developed, intriguing characters and one of the first games to ever use cinematic tools in its storytelling."
Half of me is saying, "YES!", the other is saying, "Oh, no."

Yeah, me too. Is this a live-action film or a CGI one?

I used to love this game back when it first came out. As in who would play Snake is a good question.
How about Eric Bana?

Why "oh no"? As long as Kojima is involved it'll be fine, especially since MGS is already pretty much a movie game to begin with.
But really, I'd watch Snake jump rope for 2 hours : (

Well, no matter how much he's involved, as Sony says, "how do you put into it everything fans expect or want?" Thats the reason for 'oh, no', because I hope the little things that stick in your mind, like philosophical phrases from the girl you save the game with (forgotten her name), Otacon's anime preoccupation, or Snake's 'smoking' (sad, but a part of the mythos) aren't dropped, that kind of thing - you know?
They can always get together an acceptable, if narrowed down, plot with all the character points and a suitable version of a Metal Gear tank, but without the little nuances as I mentioned it might not feel right.
Someone mentioned if this will be CGI, but it won't be, it will be live action. I did at one stage favour an anime version of the film (Kojima was definitely in talks for one with Production IG), but now I am leaning more to live action.
As far as actors go, its a sensitive area, mess up the actor and you're completely sunk most of the time. Just look at the 'Chairman Wesker' character in 'Resident Evil Extinction' - he is definitely NOT the Wesker I grew up with through the games.
Though Bana is a good choice, I still favoured Kurt Russell, at one stage considered for the voice of Snake for the animated version, in the role. Still, perhaps as Big Boss more than Snake, as he is quite seasoned now!
Kurt Russell obviously played 'Snake Plissken' in 'Escape From New York'. Snake used this as an alias in MGS2 - "Lt. J.G Plissken..." - I know you're all going - 'duh' about now, but it bears mentioning!

I'd have rather have the regular voice from the game itself honestly.
Kurt could be a good second choice though. But that's as far as it should go. He would need to lose about 20 years to do a live action and yes 'Duh' regarding the names but I have a good reason there. I never saw Escape From NewYork but I have seen his sequel which I think sucked and wouldn't remember the name (Plissken) if my life depended on it.

Oh, I think those are the things that will stick around actually. MGS is all about characterization. Without it, obviously no one would care much about what happens to the characters. I would find it hard to remember Meryl Silverburgh's full name (haha :P) or that Otacon and Sniper Wolf were actually dating at one point. Many, many people will be disappointed if any of these character traits are taken away, and I think they will stay, especially since Sony and Konami are buddy-buddies anyway.
The things that I (as the MGS nerd) would wish they keep is the little pop culture references (barring the whole Snake thing of course). For instance, the camera angles when you control naked Raiden, and how there would be a random object conveniently blocking the view of his little worm (ala Austin Powers).

Kurt would have been the perfect choice but yeah he's too old now. Bana is pretty alright. David Hayter (the guy who voices Snake) is too fat and not rugged enough to be Snake. Maybe he can just dub the thing.
For extra 'duh' factor, Snake in MGS2 even went as far as introducing himself to Raiden as 'Iroquois Plissken', where 'iroquois' is a Native American term for--surprise surprise--'snake'.
