Default Resident Evil: Degeneration

Just when we thought the Resident Evil (or Biohazard) films had finished for the foreseeable future - we get 'Degeneration'.

But there's something different about this film, it has no connection to the Milla Jovovich hits, instead it is a CGI movie sequel to the game 'Resident Evil 4' and a prequel to the game 'Resident Evil 5'.
Capcom does say, however, that unlike SQUARE's 'FF7 Advent Children', this can be appreciated and enjoyed by audiences unfamiliar with the games.

"Capcom Japan’s representative director and president: Haruhiro Tsujimoto (Capcom) and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan representative director and president: Ken Munekata (SPEJ) have announced coproduction of Resident Evil: Degeneration, the first full-length CG animation feature based upon the Resident Evil series of games and movies. Currently in production, it’s got plans for a terrifying release in 2008.
Resident Evil (called Biohazard in Japan), began as a hit international video game franchise created by Capcom, then made its debut on the silver screen as the live-action film Resident Evil, distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures Entertainment. Resident Evil is the first trilogy of live-action movies to have come from a video game franchise. Capcom and Sony Picture’s Japanese subsidiary SPEJ have teamed up to give birth to a CG-animated Resident Evil with groundbreaking visual effects and a brand-new story line.
The films “Resident Evil” and “Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse” have each grossed more than US$100 million at the Box Office internationally. “Resident Evil 3: Extinction” has been the biggest hit of the series in the U.S. to date, by grossing over US$48 million in just over three weeks, adding to the high performance and public support for this zombie-loving franchise.

'We envision this instalment to be enjoyed by the general movie going public as well as avid fans of not only the games, but the films so far as well. The CG technology is now so refined that it can now deliver just as much terror, suspense and emotion as live action and we believe that more and more CG features are the way of the future - no restraints in sets, look, style or movement - the films can be exactly the way the director or writer envisages them.'

It doesn't stop here either, with Hideo Kojima (creator of Zone Of The Enders and Metal Gear Solid) reportedly paying close attention to the project from across the video game spectrum at Konami and even Hasbro murmuring about an all new full CGI 'Transformers' feature utilising Generation one style character designs.
Whatever the future of the film animation industry, Ken Munekata of Sony Pictures Japan still believes actors, cinematographers and designers will still play a big part in a CG film revolution, 'there will still be need for those people in the industry, they have to convey to the animators what will look silly or what works well in any aspect of the virtual world to help sell realism and help the audience connect'."

Thats an extremely good marketing business decision, and am shocked it came from Hollywood. Love the franchise. Resident Evil still is the only game Ive played that scared me.

Ah yes, this one is supposed to actually have something to do with the games themselves.

HA! Good call! THe movies def super-heroed the characters. Chris Redfield would run for his life from Milla! The first film hardly had any game conection, but still good.

The movies and games exist independantly, but the idea in the first film was to create a back story as to why and how the outbreak occured.
The second took place during certain events, say, in Resident Evil 2 or 3 and the third showed the aftermath to the Resident Evil mythos.
I think you had to put an Alice type character in there for, firstly, an original story arc outside the games and secondly to lift the excitment level for cinema audiences.

After seeing many CG movies or shows, realistic or intentionally 2D looking, I have seen, as many here have as well no doubt, that the technology gets better and better. I am very excited about seeing this CG movie. 'Beowulf' is perhaps the best example to date, but 'FF: Spirits Within' still holds up extremely well.

The CG products I refer to are:

Reboot (TV Series)
Heavy Gear (TV Series)
Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles (TV Series)
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (Feature Film)
Spider-man: The New Animated Series (TV Series)
Appleseed (Feature Film)
Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children (Feature Film)
Beowulf (Feature Film)

The industry has such a wealth of knowledge and experience that a photo realistic CG film with reasonably detailed and relaistic characters shouldn't be that far off at all.

FF:SW looks MUCH better than Advent Children IMO, but it was just really hard to get into, and had next to no connection with any Final Fantasy. I think that was one of the problems; if they had just called it something else other than Final Fantasy it would have fared better.

ReBoot was awesome. The CG kind of sucks now but back then it was totally groundbreaking (pardon the cliched word). I think it was the first time I saw a character in a show grow up. Into a rugged unshaven badass with a prosthetic eye.

I agree, they should have called it just 'Spirits Within' and not 'Final Fantasy: Spirits Within' as it is more like 'ALIENS' and 'The Abyss' than anything else remotely FF related.
As for FF7, it was intentionally made to look anime rather than realistic and I think it worked marvelously - except for one fact - that it required the viewer to have played the FF7 game beforehand as many plot points are just given as granted with no explanation of relations to characters or situations.
On the flipside, the DVD contains a segment of VG footage explaining the backstory, but you don't want to have to show this to everyone who watches it and if you don't show it to them, they mostly afterwards think 'WTF?'

Yeah, it's actually amazing how many new fans FF7 generated from Advent Children despite the backstory requirement. Although, I think the backstory is necessary only as far as to explain how these people knew each other in the first place, as the movie can work as an entirely new plot if it were not for the characters.

Also, in all honesty, I think it crapped all over what was established by FF7 in favor of fangirl service. :<
