I'm wierd that way.
The ironic thing about it is I'm originally from Newfoundland where the inhabitants speak an English/Irish/Scottish/French/slang dialect.
It's hard as hell for most other Canadians to even understand Newfies and now over 25 years later, I can't understand them either. I can't believe I used to talk that way when I was a kid.
As for subtitles, let me give you an example:
During The Chronicles of Narnia when the little girl met the goat-boy, Mr. Timnus she asks what he is and he replies, " I'm a phone!"
I was like..." Huh...? Wuzzah? A phone?"
Stop. Rewind. Subtitles on.
" I'm a faun!"
Ahhhhhh....." OK, the subs stay on!"
Took me forever to even watch Snatch or Lock Stock because I knew I'd have a problem with the accents. Thank God I remembered about the subtitles.
Some british accents are easier for me to get than others though.
Never had a problem understanding Captain Picard!

Thats quite a story! I grew up in Australia watching UK programs every day - Doctor Who, The Goodies, Tripods, Chronicles Of Narnia TV series, The Bill, Triffids, Heartbeat, Torchwood and of course the comedies mentioned, etc - so thats probably why I don't give British accents a second thought.

My all time favorites are Fawlty Towers, Ab Fab, and Bottom. We have nothing in the US that's even comparable. Oh, I can't forget the oldies...Benny Hill, Are You Being Served, and Keeping Up Appearances!

I've been forced to watch Monty Python, and I don't understand what is so awesome about it. I fall asleep every time!!
