It's funny, I was gonna start a thread somewhat like this the other day. We don't seem to have a true A list of actors like we had in the 80's and 90's when anything that some stars did was a hit. Guys like Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis and Harrison Ford could do no wrong. Now actors seem to try to balance their careers with big blockbusters and smaller films that might not make a ton of money. George Clooney is the master of that area right now. He probably makes better decisions than anyone out there. By making "Ocean's 12" for Warner Brothers he was able to get some more personal projects like "The Good German" made.
My Best 5 list:
1. George Clooney.
2. Matt Damon. He's followed Clooney's model and been able to stand out from the crowd of actors in his generation.
3. Tom Cruise. Sure, his image has taken a huge hit, but when he's on-screen he owns it. I used to hate him, but stuff like "Collateral" and "The Last Samurai" changed my mind.
4. Christian Bale. He doesn't seem to make any bad movies.
5. Tom Hanks. Because he still makes hits and has the charm that a lot of actors don't.
I left off some notable ones. Like Johnny Depp, just because I think he makes too many Tim Burton movies. Making one with Michael Mann is a good step though. Daniel Day-Lewis is probably the best actor on the planet, but he needs to make movies more often. Will Smith is probably number 6 on my list, which is amazing considering what I thought of him a few years ago.
