Part 1 of my critique of SOUTHLAND TALES.

First Im going to give my critiques as Im watching the film. So my reviews might come off disjointed somewhat, but they'll be real & raw. After all folks this is just for fun!

10 yrs from now alot of the actors in this movie will be big time, and this film a cult classic. Imo Will Sasso is underrated, and has great look & potential. This movie is just awful. Whatever Rock gained from Get Shorty 2 just couldve been destroyed with this horrid ditty. It will be remembered for for all that is suck in cinema! Of the 30 min Ive watched so far 10 min of necessary dialogue, and the rest babble. Whats scary is this film is two and a half hours long!

Gellar & Rock have the goods, and I hope their careers do one day take off. The porno Hummer car commercial was far too raw yet hilarious! The Rock NEEDS a more intense acting lessons. His raw charisma will give him a career, but there are times where he's glaringly painful to watch. It would help smooth his craft out around the edges.

Im an hour into it now, and I have to stop. I mean this with no offense or fiction, but this film succeds in
being an analogy to Ed Wood. They truly believed the comedic timing, mood, and tone was there.
As our Movieforums.org critic it is my DUTY to finish this movie that causes me to verbally and openly scold it as I watch.

I turn it off again just 15 minutes more into it. This movie is pain!
I havent seen a movie so disjointed, and plain bad at this level since Doom Generation. What a pot of piss this movie is!

I must stop to preserve my own mind. Im 1 hr 15 min into this, and theres more than 75 minutes to go!
Be afraid. Be very afraid. Im looking forward to finishing this like that kid getting ready to stand in the corner at the end of Blair Witch!

Spoilers For Southland Tales

It was funny, sad, frightening, silly and that was just the first 45 minutes. Southland Tales has managed to capture the insanity that is life in the United States and sometimes not in a good way.

There was so much happening at any given moment that it’s almost an overload of the senses. I didn’t want to blink for fear of missing something relevant.

First let me say that I like strange movies and this one is definitely strange. A porn star has her own clothing line, energy drink etc. Bush has screwed up the country so badly that the citizens no longer have their privacy (maybe not so strange). All movements are monitored by a bitchy woman who stays constantly glued to uncountable computer screens. The most popular drug is a hallucinogen that actually makes good music come out of Justin Timberlake’s mouth (a Killer’s song).

I can’t stand The Rock. Never liked him as a wrestler and even less as an actor, but I was able to get past that because I was so into the movie. Thank goodness Timberlake didn’t lip synch any of his own songs or I would have needed the mute button. The rest of the cast I liked.

Some of the acting is kind of campy and lacking believability, but I think that was the intent of the director to add to ridiculousness of some of the scenes in his apocalyptic vision. Critics say that it is muddled, confusing, senseless, etc., but that is probably because they didn’t understand it.

Overall I found Southland to be entertaining and thought provoking. I saw it more than a week ago and still think about some of the scenes. This is one film I’m going to add to my collection. It was that good. I give it an A.

And yes, the best scenes in the movie where the ones with Sam in them.

Since the alternate ending fixed most of my gripes, the only one I had left with the movie was the look of the dark seekers. I think it would have been a lot scarier if they had actual actors in make up instead of the obviously cgi mutants. For an example, just look at the Reapers in "Blade 2". They were only cgi when they were doing something not humanly possible, which is the perfect way to use it.
I only have seen the alternate ending on YouTube but I didn't prefer it over the regular one.

*Spoilers*

I don't like the fact that this creature cared and was only after the woman. Why stop there. It wasn't long before that they wanted Smith dead.

I wasn't a huge fan of the original ending either but for me it made more sense with the story.

As for the CGI's vs people in make-up, I personally am glad they went way of the cgi's. At times you can see they were fake but for the most part, I thought they looked bang on and very physically threatening and menacing.

On the making of the movie features on the blu ray, they say that they did try actors in make up at first, but that it looked like a bunch of mime's attacking. They show a brief clip of that, but they just looked like bald guys covered in powder. I think they could have done a better job with that. They showed a couple other scenes too, one Anna visiting St Patrick's Cathedral in New York and getting emotional, and another of Neville and Ethan goofing around in a store.

Okay, I'm all Legend'ed out now.

Im starting to watch the second half. Damn Claire Im really trying to find the goods in this turd, but I find no corn! Timberlake disfigured was probably his own idea, and his music video is the high point in the film so far. Ive got exactly one hour left, and have to stop to stop to go to work thank god.

What's shit to one person can be perfume to another. Actually maybe not, but you get my drift.

Ive developed a theory on Southland Tales. Theyre trying to be bad on purpose. Less than 45 minutes to go... Why would a sickening cinematic spectacle have to exist like this though.

Cheri OTeri, Will Sasso, Rock, John Laroquette, and Gellar have the high spots in the film, but Rock has some of the worst ones too. 30 minutes to go...

LMMFAO!! You just made my day Rob. I think I will leave for the night
on that note.

One question before I do though.

How does this thread work? Rob did you go out and rent this just to talk about it since you're only now watching it?
