Sorry to bump an old thread.

But just had to add a vote for my favourite Werner Herzog

Who else has winched a boat over a steep hill in the Amazon? (Fitzcaraldo)
Who else has hypnotised the cast to portray the devestation of a village due to the loss of the secret of Ruby Glass? (Ruby Glass)
Who else has had crew killed from hostile tribes when filming? (Aguire Wrath of God)
Who else has had an entire cast of disabled dwarves and thrown live chickens through a window? (Even Dwarves Strated Small)
He has taken the homeless from the streets and transformed them to star in his films. (Strauschak?)

The love/hate relationship between him and Klaus Kinski managed to get the actor to really tap into his madness, on one film Kinski even held a loaded pistol to Werner's head.

I could go on ... for me he is BRILLIANT.

Mind you Lang is also a master.

Have you seen 'Rescue Dawn'? Now that is another brilliant film from Herzog, if not as inspired as previous efforts, but the friction between him and the studio/crew is still alive and well and its one of the reasons its release was so limited and stifled in the US.

I love Metropolis. For an old movie, it's incredible. Very creative, good plot, good pictures. That's why I choose Fritz Lang.

Without a doubt, I would say it was 'Das Boot' that made him famous, not 'Troy' - Troy may have raised people's awareness, but he became 'famous' after the masterpiece 'Das Boot'.

Hmm...It really depends on what you mean by 'successful'. Herzog may have not made as much $ as some, but he's made better films (at least in my opinion).

I also like me a good F.W. Murnau or Fritz Lang as well.

Surprised that Wim Wenders isn't on the list.

By successful I meant, really, in any regard. Lang may not have made the money Herzog has, but then again Herzog has made more films and had more exposure. Lang is still widely considered the better director in spite of this.
