Performances you think should have won the Oscar
Have you ever watched a movie, seen that an actor was nominated for an Oscar for their performance, but lost to someone else? Well, this post is your chance to let us know what losses you disagree with.
-Whoopi Goldberg in The Color Purple. I get goosebumps whenever I watch the scene where Celie finally tells Mister that he's never going to beat her again. Say what you will about her stint on The View, her performance in The Color Purple was nothing short of legendary.
-Angela Bassett in What's Love Got To Do With It. Well Angela's a great actress, so it's not surprising that she got an Oscar nomination for this, but I wish she'd won so this could be the first black actress to get the Best Actress Oscar instead of Halle Berry for Monsters Ball, which in my opinion wasn't really her BEST performance. A good one, yes, but not her best. That was Losing Isaiah. Angela's performance in WLGTDWI was just stellar. Despite the fact that she looks NOTHING like Tina, by the end of the movie, you kinda forget that.
-Bette Midler in The Rose. Actually, I really only think so because of my pro-Bette bias. I love Sally Field who won that year for Norma Rae, an equally impressive performance, but I love Bette Midler more. It's Bette's performance in The Rose that actually makes it rewatchable. Frankly, if just about any other actress had done the film, it wouldn't be nearly as good because the film itself is mediocre at best. But when she's performing on stage, you forget that the film sucks. You just think "Wow, who knew Bette could sing like a bluesy rock gal?" And her dramatic moments are often spine-tingling.
